・Fiscal Year 2008 Opening Course
In parallel to its promotion of research programs, the global COE is promoting an education program which incorporates the three research approaches of field linguistics, corpus linguistics, and language informatics. This also touches on research approaches other than the ones each student is mainly involved with so it teaches them multiple perspectives, and with the empirical analysis of language use at its core, has the aim of training human resources that have mastered the ability to apply them to the methods and practices of language research.
The courses that were offerred in fiscal year 2008 are as follows. (Refer to the course guidance for details.)

Field Linguistics Education Program

Class subject: Field Linguistics: Phonetics and Phonology (First semester, Thursday, second period)
Lecturer: Nakagawa, Hiroshi
Outline: The objective of this class is to teach the students introductory methods for phonetic and phonological surveys in linguistic surveys. It offers practical training on the basics of mechanical phonetic methods for recording language phonetics data. It is aimed at students with no experience of data collection in this field.
Class subject: Field Linguistics: Morphosyntax (Second semester, Tuesday, fourth period)
Lecturer: Hieda, Osamu
Outline: The objective of this class is to study morphosyntax within field linguistics as a part of the GCOE education program. Its goal is to teach the students the minimal amount of knowledge deemed to be necessary when implementing a local survey to describe the morphosyntax of language. The students will aim to understand the diversity of the world’s languages, and obtain the skills to implement local surveys flexibly.
Class subject: Field Linguistics (Second semester, Tuesday, second period)
Lecturer: König, Christa
Outline: Refer to the file below*
Class subject: Field Linguistics: Local Survey Practical Training (Second semester (including the summer local survey))
Lecturer: Peri Bhaskararao
Outline: This course teaches the important techniques in collection, documentation and analysis of the major components of a language not known to the student.

Corpus Linguistics Education Program

Class subject: The Theory and Practice of Corpus Linguistics: Basic Course (First Semester, Wednesday, second period)
Lecturer: Tono, Yukio
Outline: Consists of classes to teach students majoring in field linguistics and language informatics a certain level of knowledge about the basic theory and methodology of corpus linguistics.
Class subject: The Theory and Practice of Corpus Linguistics: Applied Course (Second semester, Wednesday, second period)
Lecturer: Tono, Yukio
Outline: Gives graduate students involved in the global COEs a broad overview of applied research in corpus linguistics and related fields. There are a wide range of applications to the various corpus linguistics fields being implemented. The course will present an outline of these, with the focus on English corpus linguistics, and will explore application examples and possibilities in each language.
Class subject: Corpus Linguistics: Applied Course (Second semester, Tuesday, third period)
Lecturer: Narita, Takashi, Tomimori, Nobuo, Nakazawa, Hidehiko, Emiko HAYATU, Minegishi, Makoto, Sawada, Hideo (in tandem)
Outline: The goal of the class is to specifically show the various possibilities for language research using corpora and give perspectives that will provide hints for each participant’s language research. The class will be taught by six members of the teaching staff who specialize in the languages of Europe, North America, Asia and Japan, who will lecture in tandem while presenting specific examples of aspects of language research using corpora.

Linguistic informatics Education Program

Class subject: Quantitative Surveys and Research Methods for Lexicon and Writing Style (First Semester, Thursday, fifth period)
Lecturer: Ito, Masamitsu
Outline: In addition to the lectures, in this class we will create a small corpus for “Night on the Galactic Railroad” and then create its lexicon table, and based on that guide the students through the method of analyzing the characteristics and regularities of the lexicon and writing style and the technique of choosing between the basic lexicon and the characteristic lexicon.
Class subject: Language Informatics (First Semester, Thursday, second period)
Lecturer: Sano, Hiroshi
Outline: In the first half we will study the techniques for collecting data that can be applied in corpus linguistics and computational linguistics and the methodology for the quantitative analysis of words. In the second half, we will study the methodology for creating teaching materials (instructional design).
Class subject: Quantitative Surveys and Research Methods for Grammar and Meaning (Second semester, intensive)
Lecturer: Ito, Masamitsu
Outline: The lecture will mainly focus on the presentation of examples and the examination of problems related to quantitative research into grammar and meaning. Moreover, there are various problems if the results of examples collected from a search of a corpus are used, so together with the students we will think about these issues.

・Other GCOE-Related Classes

Class subject: How to Read and Write Articles on Linguistics in English (Second semester, Wednesday, third period)
Lecturer: König, Christa
Outline: Refer to the file below*
Class subject: Typology (Second semester, Tuesday, fifth period)
Lecturer: Heine, Bernd
Outline: Refer to the file below*

Syllabi of Heine, Bernd; König, Christa
