1.Project name: Research on Corpora for Minority Language Groups in EU Countries
2.Outline of the Project:
Regarding so called “minority languages” (including official languages, non-official languages, regional languages, and dialects, etc. for which little basic research has been done) in EU countries, and in neighboring countries where necessary, we will survey research trends related to corpus construction within the research institutions of the applicable regions. We will also investigate the connections with language policies related to the EU minority languages. In this fiscal year, we will do descriptive researches using the corpus based on the results of these preparatory studies.

5.Progress:
This fiscal year, we investigated the following language regions based on the research assignment fields of applicants and cooperating researchers within the university.
(i) Within Switzerland: the corpus survey of Romansh (text entering and corpus creation for folk tales) and Swiss German
(ii) Within Latvia: (survey of the socio-linguistic situation, language policies, and corpus research, descriptive studies of Latvian)
6.Accomplishments:
(i) Romansh: A report of descriptive researches based on Romansh language corpus and concordance of some literary works and novels. (CD also available)
(ii) A descriptive study of Latvian, based on corpus researches of the language (can be printed)
