1.Project name: Development of an Electronic Dictionary in Thai

2.Outline of the Project:
Based on the printed version of “Thai-Japanese, Japanese-Thai Dictionary for Thai People” (the Thailand-Japan Cultural Exchange Promotion Society) and “Unabridged Thai-Japanese Dictionary” (Mekong Publishing), we aim to develop an electronic dictionary and a machine-readable dictionary for corpus analysis.

3.Core Members in Charge: Minegishi, Makoto; Akagi, Osamu (Global COE Program Professor April 2008-May 2010), Sato, Hirokazu (Global COE Program Professor since April 2008)

4.Collaborating Researchers: Krisada Visavateeranon (President of Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology), Koichi-Mizutani (Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology)

5.Progress:
Regarding the academic and research use, electronic duplication, and the enlargement and revision of the described items and described contents of the “Thai-Japanese, Japanese-Thai Dictionary for Thai People” (the Japan-Thailand Cultural Exchange Promotion Society) and the “Unabridged Thai-Japanese Dictionary” (Mekong Publishing), we obtained a letter of consent addressed to the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies from the copyright holder of the original edition.

In 2007, we have made the data conversion work and formulation of the XML tag specifications for the Thai-Japanese, Japanese-Thai Dictionary.
Since 2008, we have made a beta version of the above dictionary open to the public via our web site for Thai to learn Japanese language. It contains approximately 20,000 Japanese and Thai headwords respectively. Also MOU has been prepared between Thai-Nichi Institute of Technology in Thailand and TUFS for further developing and revising electronic dictionaries and tools jointly.
Based on the above data, re-examining the descriptions of Thai language has been going on. After re-examining pronunciation completed in 2011, semantic analysis of verbs has been going on. Part of the results of analyzing verbs in Thai have were presented in Chula-Japan Linguistics Conference, the conferences of Southeast Asian Linguistics Society (SEALS XX and XXI), and the workshop held in Maison des Sciences de l’homme (House of the Sciences of Man) in Paris, 2011.
